Since its introduction in 1932, Don Q has been Puerto Rico’s de facto signature rum and for decades has been vying for market share not just on the island but also on the US mainland. Over the years, rivalry with other rum brands such as Cuba’s Bacardi has pushed them to craft newer and more innovative expressions such as experimenting with cask-finishing as well as creating newer iterations of classic rum creations – all in an effort to edge out the competition.
Among the results of this quest for perfection is the Don Q Signature Release Single Barrel 2007, the second entry into their line of vintage offerings that hopes to create a true single barrel product by using a single distillate in its production. Distilled from high-quality sugar cane, the rum is aged in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels for at total of 9 years to slowly develop its flavors before being brought to proof with pure water and then bottled.
Golden amber in color, each sip of this rum begins with a mouth-watering aroma of coconut flakes, orange marmalade, chocolate, honey, cinnamon, French toast, and maple syrup which the gives way to a rich, sweet, and complex palate of cinnamon spice, more chocolate, more orange, toasted walnuts, pecans, dried apples, burnt caramel, allspice, and oak, wrapped up by a very long finish of passion fruit, sweet molasses, toasted brown sugar, and firm tannins.
With a limited production run of only 36,000 numbered bottles, the Don Q Signature Release Single Barrel 2007 Limited Edition is a sweet treat that’s definitely worth savoring. Get yourself a bottle today while you still can and celebrate life alongside the flavors of premium Puerto Rican rum.
